Why LinkedIn has no bold or italic button

LinkedIn's composer only accepts plain text. There is no bold button, no italic button, and no list button. The same editor you use to comment is the one you use to publish. That is why every well-formatted post you have seen was written somewhere else and pasted in.

How bold text on LinkedIn actually works

Unicode contains full alphabets that look like bold or italic Latin letters but are technically separate characters. This tool substitutes them in, so what you paste back into LinkedIn keeps its styling without any markup.

Select the text you want to change, pick a style, and copy the result. The bullet and line-break helpers do the same job for lists, which LinkedIn also strips.

How to format a LinkedIn post without hurting it

• Bold your hook, not your post. One or two phrases per post is plenty.
• Keep keywords in plain text. Styled characters are not indexed the same way.
• Watch the length. The character counter shows where the feed cuts your post off.
• Check the mobile preview. Most of your readers are on a phone, where a three-line paragraph already looks like a wall.
• Never style a call to action you care about. If a screen reader skips it, it may as well not be there.
